First on this page is a piece
of a Lucas interview taken from Empire magazine in the UK. Some
of this material may be regarded as spoilers by some. Following
the interview is a Fans Episode II synopsis compiled by theforce.net
from emails sent to them by fans on what they thought Episode
II would entail.
The following pieces (are) from an 'Empire' magazine interview
with George Lucas on the day after the UK premiere of TPM. There
are Episode 1 spoilers.
Lucas: The next film is a love
story and I don't know how that is going to be taken by the fans
Lucas: And then the third film is very, very, very dark. It's
not a happy movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's a tragedy.
(Personally, I think this is very, very cool. Of course it
will hurt it's box office take becuase your average viewer wants
a happy ending.)
Lucas: Ultimately the final story is between Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin and the Queen. It's really their story. Those four characters.
Lucas: At one point, when Obi-Wan kills Darth Maul, he just fell into the pit. I looked at it and thought this isn't going to work because, if people like him enough, they are going to want him to come back and they're going to assume somehow he gets out of it. So I had to cut him in half to say this guy's gone, he's history, he ain't coming back. I'll come up with another apprentice. The whole issue of having apprentices, poor Darth Sidious trying to replenish his apprentice supply, is one of the main plot points.
Empire: In Episode IV, R2-D2 and C-3PO land on Tatooine and haven't got a clue where they are. Yet in the Phantom Menace R2 travels to Tatooine and C-3PO was built there. How so?
Lucas: How so? That will all be coming up. There's a lot of little things that'll be cleared up. The other one that gets asked a lot is why doesn't Qui-Gon disappear like everybody else? That's a plot point that centres around Obi-Wan saying to Vader/Anakin in the first one, "If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." There is an issue about the Force and that will be revealed.
Empire: Does this sort of retro reading get on your nerves?
Lucas: A lot of it is just nitpicky.
Most people just don't care about that stuff. There's a lot of
things that will be explained more. Some of it is important plot
stuff - the Qui-Gon one is, 3PO isn't.
Fans Episode II Synopsis
Fri, May 21, 99 12:20:54 PM CST
After completing years of Jedi
training, Anakin, played by Ray Parks and the young Queen, again
played by Natalie Portman, are planning to be married. Palpatine,
reprising his role as Palpatine, is now the Supreme Chancllor
of the galaxy and is continuing his political march to the top.
Obviously, Anakin's crutch or Achilles heel, is his mother. A
Jedi can ill afford to have such weekness and fear or turn to
the dark side of the Force they will. Obi-Wan tells him to control
his fear and prepare himself for what he may find when at Tatooine.
Shmi is killed, all that is left on Tatooine is C3-P0 now nearly complete, and a young girl named Beru. C3-P0 is not the accomplished storyteller we all know him as from later movies, but he adequately shares what his eyes have seen. It is very artistic, as the death of Shmi is never shown on screen. Apparently, she was killed during a cloning experiment for the newly established Empire, led by Darth Sidious.
The true reasons for the battle of Naboo in Episode I, was that they were protecting the technology othat would lead us to the Clone Wars. The first clone, Darth Maul, was successful and is the force-strong apprentice of the Sith Lord Sidious. And thus begins the journey of Anakin to the dark side. In his anger, he frees the slaves of Tatooine, and fights a battle with desert skiffs against the Hutt clan. His Rodian friend is killed in the battle, as well as Jira from the frut stand. Many are saved, but his anger builds as he loses his friends. And still Jabba escapes, and the town of Mos Espa was destroyed. Anakin, his sister Beru, C3-P0 and the rest of their clan head out into space. Meanwhile, Anakin's friend Kister has been cloned and will become the eventual Boba Fett, flying the appropriately named 'Slave I.'
In another sequence, Anakin's father is revealed, and the midichlorians are explained in greater detail. There is also the introduction of the Sith and the Sith Council. The Jedi council is confused by the return of the Sith and are afraid to mount a full scale attack on the infant rebellion of the Empire.
While definitely controversial, many readers think Darth Sidious and Palpatine are not the same person. This is confirmed when, in the Kvat Drive yards, the secret manufacturing base of the Empire/Trade Federation, they are in a scene together. They are manufacturing Tie Fighters and other new vehicles to combat the now aging Z-95 Headhunters of the Jedi.
Obi-Wan and Amidala hit it off well during the intermission between the movies, and the strain is taking it's toll on the relationship of Anakin and Amidala. There is something of a love triangle developing in the storyline. Jealousy runs rampant.
Just before the big climax, the Royal Guards dressed in blue, murder and betray the Jedi Council, killing them without warning. Few escape alive, and this is the start to what will be called the Clone Wars.
The climax of the film certainly is the Clone Wars. Also, there is a completely new computergenerated Jedi in the film, he is an alien that helps greatly in the wars. Clearly, the failure of the Battle Droid concept sets up the stage for enemies to begin using humans as weapons--cloned humans who can be massed produced to create an incredible fighting force.
Yoda is wounded in this epic battle encompassing all the remaining Jedi, and most of the rest are killed. Amidala, in a fulfillment of Anakin's dream, leads her people in a furocious battle against the cloned warriors, only to have her planet taken and herself taken captive. Yoda is wounded, and Mace Windu falls at the hands of the Clone Maul. Obi-Wan and Anakin, both jealous for her love, must now join together to save her from the hands of the evil Empire.
