X Wing
The X wing is
the main arm of the Rebellion's fighter wing . It unlike Imperial
ships (such as the TIE
fighter) has a hyperdrive, dedicated life support and
shields. Because of this it carries a R2 Astromech droid (like R2D2) to handle extra functions such as
storing hyper jump co-ordinates.
The X wing is fitted with an unique s foil system which allows its wings to be laid flat in normal flight for greter manovabilty but in battle the wings open in an X formation which then allows the 4 wing tip mounted laser cannons to fire, these cannons can be used to fire in different cominations.. As well as these the X wing carries a pair of torpepo bays which Luke skywalker used to destroy the first death star.
X wings have flown in all the major battles of the galatic civil war where its additional protection over Ties give it a major advanatge all though it is more expensive. In the Battle of Yavin half the fighters deployed were X wings and Luke in an X wing derstroyed the death star. In the Battle of Hoth, two X wings accompined every transport in the evacuation attempt. In the Battle of Endor, Rogue Squadron under Wedge Antillies was deployed.
