Hoth
Hoth is an ice planet, which was
orginally though to be too cold to support life before the rebels
built Echo base there to hide from the Empire after the discovery
of their base on Yavin 4.
Unfortually one of Darth Vader's
Probots found evidence of
life on the planet and the Imperial fleet was despached, The
rebels fled the planet(see Battle
of Hoth) using a series of Transporters. Luke
Skywalker discovered that the Planet did indeed support life
as he was attacked by a Wampa
creature also a species of taun tauns were discovered which
could be used as excellent mounts for the Rebels whilst their
Speeders were being converted to the cold. 
Echo base was carved from the ice with burners and became the
only refuage from the cold for miles(except the wampa's 
lair). Echo base was home to thousands of rebels and
their equipment. It was buried deep under the ground to protect
against orbital barrages, it contained shield generators and a
number of blaster
emplacements of different strengths and capabilities. A planet
based ion cannon also protected the base A series of trenches
were also present to provide cover for ground troops. Echo base
also had a number of snow
speeders for air cover although they were mainly deployed for
cargo hauling and patroling and not for combat due to their
relative light armourament.
