The Battle of Yavin
Princess Leia was
freed from her prison in the Death Star
and escaped in the Falcon. Unkown to
the alliance a homing beacon was hidden inside the falcon and
told the Empire precisly where the Rebel base was, Yavin 4 the moon above Yavin.
When the Rebels gained the Death star plans, they relised the weakness was that the Death Star station was planned with repulsing Capital Ships, In theory a starfighter could be flown, down the Equitorial Trench and fire a proton torpedeo into the Thermal Exhaust port, the chain reaction would hopefully destroy the station.
When
the Death Star arrived at Yavin, two
squadrons of fighters were deployed. One of X
wings (Red Squadron) and another of Y
wings (Gold Squadron). Red squadron was to soften the
station's defences and Gold to fly down the trench to fire into
the exhaust port.
Gold squadron was all but destroyed by turbo laser batteries
and Darth Vader and 2 TIE fighters. The
Imperial star fighters were able to cut them down from behind
because their deflector shields were pointing forward. Red
squadron was ordered to continue the runs, and managed to fire a
missile but it failed to go in. This waveof fighters was also
destroyed. Luke Skywalker, Biggs
Darklighter and Wedge Antillies then flew
down the trench. Biggs fell to Vader's
blasters, and Wedge was forced to
withdraw. Han Solo and Chewbacca in the Falcon
arrived and took out the ties leaving Luke free. Luke then fired
the missile using the force guided it down the reactor vent.
The station was destroyed and the Rebelllion won its first major victory against the Empire. With the Death Star destroyed, more planets joined the Rebellion out of fear for for a new station.
