Start Message Charlie:
The training period for the Harry S. Truman Squadron, US Naval Sea Cadet onboard the
USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN-75), including nine days underway in the Atlantic, was a resounding success.  It was a milestone in the history of the Squadron, as well as, in the history of the Naval Sea Cadet program itself.
This groundbreaking experiment will serve as a model for units seeking similar training in the future.  The following, HST Staff and Naval Sea Cadets, took part in preparing and carrying out this period of training:

    Advance        WO4 Ken Womack, USNR
      Party:   ATC(NAC) Henry Voss, USNR
ABCM(AW/SW) Keneth Kramer, USNR, Command Master Chief
AMHC Gary Stous, USNR, Naval Science Instructor

    Staff Instructors for shipboard period:

LTJG Randall Green, NSCC, Executive Officer
LCDR Eva Voss, NSCC, Admin Officer
      ABCM(AW/SW) Kenneth Kramer, USNR, CMC
AMHC Gary Stous, USNR, Naval Science Instructor
YNC(SS/SW) M. M. Jacobs, USNR (Ret.), Naval Science Instructor

Cadets: MIDN Jeremy Trotter, age 18
  MIDN Tony Garcia, age 18
  PO1 Ben Birnbaum, age 16
  PO1 Justin Green, age 16
  PO2 Daniel Budenz, age 15
  PO2 Adelle Voss, age 15
  PO3 Dustin Wileman, age 15
  PO3 Andy Bazdarich, age 16
  PO3 Shawn Kramer, age 15
  PO3 Jesse Plous, age 16
  PO3 Aaron Wilt, age 16
  SN William Taylor, age 15
  SN Jonathan Cook, age 17
  SN Jonathan Kelly, age 15
  SN Seth Reynolds, age 17
  SN Scott Shorten, age 16
  SN Curtis Newman, age 15

Cadets were got a ‘Welcome Aboard’ by the Truman’s CO, CAPT. David Logsdon and
CMC BTCM(SW/AW) Michael Driscoll.  They also met with the XO, CDR J. R. Haley and the Air Boss, CDR Brian Scott, both former US Naval Sea Cadets!

On the evening of their arrival, June 19th, 2000, the Cadets enjoyed a tour of the US Coast Guards ‘Barque’ EAGLE (WIX 327) hosted by members of the Eagle's crew, and helped the Cadets in their involvement in ‘OPSAIL 2000’, in the fine Navy family tradition.  The Eagle is a tall masted sailing ship built by Germany in 1935.  Kept as a war prize after World War Two, she has been
used as a training ship by the Coast Guard since then.  Along with a multitude of sailing vessels from around the world, the Eagle was in Norfolk, VA for ‘OPSAIL 2000’, which culminates in New York Harbor.  The cadets also had time to tour the base and visit the exchange.

Onboard the Truman, Cadets occupied a squadron berthing compartment on the 03
level aft, stowed their gear, and received shipboard orientation and training on the Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD).  They were assigned a muster station, on the hangar deck for man overboard drills and instructed to stay with their assigned departments, for all other drills. They quickly learned the best routes to the ‘chow hall’ from various parts of the ship.

During the underway period, the Cadets were divided into five groups, with an
Instructor from the HST Squadron to accompany and supervise each group throughout their training.  The groups were rotated in order, to spend  two days with each of  the following shipboard departments:

 1.  DECK / WEAPONS
 2.  NAVIGATION / OPERATIONS / COMBAT SYSTEMS
 3.  ENGINEERING
 4.  AIR INTERMEDIATE MAINTENANCE DEPT. / AIR DEPT.
 5.  SUPPLY / ADMINISTRATION / MEDICAL / DENTAL

The underway period began the morning of June 21st and the Cadets were
up early, stationed in the ‘Foc’sle’ to observe the sea and anchor detail. They began the day learning about a Carrier’s heavy-duty ground tackle "up close", helping to haul in mooring lines.  During their sea time on the Truman, the cadets received nearly constant training in shipboard operations which included as much hands-on experience as possible.  While at sea the ship conducted training for ships company as well as, Squadron pilots (RAG/CAG) performing their Carrier Qualifications
(CARQUALS)  both day and night.  In this period, F14D and F/A18C Fighters, E2-C Airborne Early Warning, and C2, COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) pilots made 605 CATOFFS and arrested landings on the flight deck.  Except for bad weather days, the flight deck operated virtually around the clock.  Beside take-off and landings, cadets observed other shipboard evolutions such as Underway Replenisment, with fueling (UNREP), helicopter Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP),
and launching the motor whaleboat. Also, such drills as: loss-of-steering casualty, propulsion plant casualty, emergency breakaway, torpedo evasion, etc.  During work-up for deployment, drills are conducted constantly for the training of the crew and squadron members.  Other Drills, in which the cadets participated, included numerous man overboard drills, flight deck fire, JP-5 pump room fire, #1 machinery room fire, mass casualty, CBR (Chemical/Biological/Radiological) attack, medical emergency, and others.  The cadets took an active part in all training, at various times donning CBR gas masks, firefighting gear, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), handling fire hoses and other equipment.  When not assisting their assigned department, they toured the myriad of shops and work centers on board.  From ‘foc’sle to fantail’; from the signal bridge on the 011 level to the machinery rooms, and cargo holds, 8 decks down, they were allowed into virtually every space onboard, except the reactor compartment itself.

At sea, the cadets practiced teamwork in many of the less-than-glamorous, behind-the-scenes jobs on an Aircraft Carrier that are each important, and enabled the mission to be completed.  They participated in ALL normal shipboard evolutions such as working parties, "field day" and FOD
(foreign-object-damage) walkdowns daily, on both hangar and flight decks.

At quarters on June 29th, 2000 all cadets were addressed by Command-Master-Chief’s Elliot, Slinger and Dreer of COMAIRLANT, COMSURFLANT, and COMSUBLANT respectively.  The three Force Master Chiefs in turn thanked the Cadets for their hard work and praised their
respective communities, as being a great place for a young Sailor to call home.

On the return to port, Master Chief Dreer set up a Sub tour and the cadets were welcomed onboard the USS NORFOLK(SSN-714), an early "Los Angeles" class nuclear powered fast-attack submarine for a guided tour.  Something our own Chief Jacobs (Sub Sailor) knew a lot about. Soon the 13 day training was over and it was time to pack up the sea bags and head for the airport and home.

This was a unique and dynamic opportunity which these young people made the most of.  At all times the cadets performed in an outstanding manner and were complimented many times by the regular crew and officers.  There can be no doubt that these cadets can and will be the achievers and
leaders of tomorrow's sea services, or  whatever endeavor they choose to pursue!

Officers and Cadets of Harry S Truman Squadron

Greetings from Balboa, Panama, South America.  As you all know I am
currently on board the US Coast Guard Barque Eagle.  We pull in to
Balboa on Friday, 3 September, and pretty much have been on liberty
the whole time.  Tomorrow, Monday, 6 September, we will be in transit
to the Atlantic side of Panama via des Canal el Panama.  The crew has
been very kind and helpful in teaching me about the operations of the
Eagle. I will hopefully be qualified as a lookout and helmsman
tomorrow.

I want to encourage every member of HSTSQ to train extremely hard for
the upcoming Flagship Competition.  I would also like to congratulate
PO1 Chris Budenz for his selection as Chief Petty Officer, may you do
well during initiation.

Good luck during your training, and I wish you fair seas and
following winds,
Jeremy Trotter
CPO/NSCC
OPCON Chief
Harry S Truman Sqd.

PS- I will submit photos from this to the web page by November.
