TIEFLY (c) by Matthias Krenzel
Version 1.3 01/12/97
Welcome to TIEFLY - The patch that allows you to fly Imperial Ships in X-Wing, now including shuttles & transports.
I wrote this patch to allow X-Wing owners to experience a different point of view. Flying the Imperial Ships (especially the unshielded Tie-Fighters) offers a totally new challenge. This patch can assist squadrons that use both X-Wing & Tie-Fighter (like Lightning Wing) or squadrons that perform Alliance undercover mission. But it can also provide excitement for members of the top Alliance squadrons (like flying the original mineracing in a T/F <eg>).
I have to thank Chris "Electro" Schock, Corsair Leader. Without his help, I wouldn't have been able to come up with this.
This page will tell you how to install and use the patch. This is a somewhat complicated process becuase several files have to be modfied. YOU SHOULD READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE BEFORE YOU TRY TO RUN THE PATCH YOURSELF.
Files Distributed With This Patch
The files that you should have are listed here along with a very brief description:
| TIE.BRF | Example mission briefing file |
| TIE.XCD | Command file for XCDR |
| TIECD.COM | Patch program for X-Wing CD |
| TIEDSK.COM | Patch program for X-Wing Disk |
| TIE.XWI | Example mission definition file |
| INSTALL.BAT | The install program |
| TIELFD.COM | Patch program |
| README.TXT | Text version of this page |
How to Install the Patch
Follow these steps for installing the mission:
How to fly Imperial Ships Once Installed Using X-Wing Disk
If you have X-Wing on diskette, once the patch is installed you can just run X-Wing and fly a custom mission that includes an Imperial Ship as the Personal Craft (as an example see the included mission).
How to fly Imperial Ships Once Installed Using X-Wing CD
If you have X-Wing CD you will need to take some extra steps after the installation. To fly Imperial Ships you *must* use the XCD utility (XCDR.ZIP is available in Library 15 of FSCOMBAT on CompuServe or in the Lightning Wing Library). If you have the unregistered version I highly encourage you to register your copy of XCD, since Matt Hart should be compensated for his effort. If you have not registered and have not downloaded XCDR.ZIP since July 10, 1995, you should download it again. Playing these missions will be *much* easier with the new version and I do not include directions for using the older version.
1. Change directories to the directory where XCDR.COM
is located.
2. Type: XCDR c:\mission\tie.xcd and press
return
3. Run XWINGCD and fly the included custom
mission.
Included custom mission
The custom mission included is merely an example, I didn't spend much time on that one. Future releases will include a custom mission for each Imperial Craft.
Running own Custom Missions with this patch and X-Wing CD
If you create your own custom mission to run with X-Wing CD and this patch, your XCD file *HAS* to include the following two lines:
BLAST.LFD,TIE.LFD
BFLIGHT.OVL, TIE.OVL
Without these two lines, the patch will not work.
IFF signals in custom missions
Please pay attention to the IFF designation of the personal vessel. All Imperial Craft will default to Imperial (doh!), so if you don't change the IFF signature to Alliance, Rebel fighters with assignments like "Attack all Enemies" *WILL* attack the player! This makes for some interesting *real* undercover missions <eg>
Known limitations
Like similiar patches for Tie-Fighter (like the one from Michael "Vyper" Stauber) you can only use cockpit art which is already included in the game. Recently I found out how to include the original Tie Fighter cockpits in X-Wing. However, since the cockpit art is copyrighted material, I can't distribute them with this patch, so you're stuck with the Rebel Fighter cockpits. My default selection is using the A-Wing cockpit for the T/F & the T/B, the X-Wing cockpit for the T/I and the T/A and the Y-Wing cockpit for the Gunboat. Since all cockpits only support one pair of projectile weapons, but the T/B has missiles *and* torpedos, only the concussion missiles get displayed properly. You have to keep track of the torpedos yourself. Unfortunatly, there is no workaround in sight.
Bugs
This test has been throughly tested with the CD and the disk version (with both expansion disks). Since the disk version is known to be much more unstable, you might experience flaws depending on your configuration. If any bugs prove to appear frequently, please send me a detailed report.
Problems, Suggestions, Comments & Custom Missions
If you can't get the patch to work, contact me via e-mail. I would also like to hear feedback about the patch. If you have trouble designing a custom mission featuring Imperial Craft, I'm available for help. I also would enjoy looking at Custom Missions based on this patch, so if you think you made an interesting one, please send it to me.
Future releases
One of the next versions will be able to patch the FLIGHT.OVL of the original disk version (without the B-Wing add-on). Also a Custom Mission for every Imperial Ship is planned.
