Mechanical Engineer, Product Development (1999-2002)

Woodside Biomedical specializes in Nerve Stimulation Therapy devices for the treatment of nausea and vomiting due to motion sickness, chemotherapy, morning sickness, and post-operative side effects.  Engineering tasks included product prototyping, design and validation, material selection, and production planning.  Daily use of Solidworks and AutoCAD.  Cosmos/works used for preliminary finite element analysis.

 

Major accomplishments include:

 

·        Lead Designer of insert molded plastic case to accommodate sheet metal electrodes and electronics assembly.  Case and electrodes are now in full scale production for entire product line.

 

·        Lead Designer of injection molded water-tight carrying case for medical device.  Completed carrying case of next generation product using industrial design concept sketch.  Carrying case will be entering full scale production for new product line.

 

·        Lead Designer of Medical Device Packaging.  Created custom thermo-formed clamshell packaging for nerve stimulation device and accessories.  Used both 2D AutoCAD and 3D Solidworks models to ensure fit, function, and manufacturability.

 

·        LCD project leader.  Primary contact with qualified Liquid Crystal Display vendors.  Performed all iterative revisions and obtained prototypes from vendors.  Also designed elastomeric connector for LCD, obtained operational prototypes, and secured vendors for full-scale production.

 

 Professional training obtained while employed at Woodside:

 

·        Solidworks Training Courses - 

Completed in February 2000. Courses taken at Digital Dimensions Inc., an authorized Solidworks Training Facility.

 

·        Solving the Plastic Product Design & Development Puzzle - Completed in December 2000 (Orange County, CA). Course covers fundamental plastics design principles as well as manufacturing guidelines and material properties.

 

 

University of California, San Diego Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Independent Researcher (1997-1998)

 

·        Conducted independent research in the Microcirculation laboratory of Dr. G. Schmid-Schonbein. Research collaboration with Dr. R. Sah, and Dr. F. Lacy.

 

·        Daily use of Spectrophotometry and Clark Electrode techniques.

 

·        Research focus was on the measurement of Oxygen Free Radicals in human blood samples taken from patients with Hypertension, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Blood samples were collected from patients of the Veterans Administration Hospital adjacent to UCSD.  This study was a pedigree study and tracked trends in family heath conditions.

 

·        Research published in the Journal of Hypertension,
Lacy, F., O'Connor, D. T., Schmid-Schonbein, G.W.: Plasma hydrogen peroxide production in hypertensive and normotensive subjects at genetic risk for hypertension.

Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla –Continuing Education Dept. Competency List Publisher  (1998)

 

·        Updated and published Scripps staff competency lists with the Director of Continuing Education at the Schaetzel Center of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Interacted with department heads to standardize competency lists.

 

·        Daily extensive use of Microsoft Word.

·        Performed data entry and management, also produced publications for international education programs.

 

·        Heavy use of FoxPro Database Software, Claris FileMaker Pro 3.0 and moderate use of dBase database software as well as Adobe PageMaker 6.0 on both Windows 95 and Macintosh O/S computers.
