You Are My Partner
By Lea Connor
Scully was sitting in her apartment alone, she was so confused. Now that Diana
Fowley was back things had changed between them. She felt Mulder no longer needed her. Scully
had been in touch with Skinner and asked about being transferred. He had given her a couple of days to think it over. She had to go and tell Mulder.
BASEMENT OFFICE, FBI HEADQUARTERS
Mulder was in his office looking through a file. The door opened and in walked
Scully.
"Hi Scully," he said smiling.
"Mulder," she said quietly.
He knew something had happened. "Scully what's wrong?" he answered, the smile
leaving his face.
"I've asked Skinner for a transfer."
"But why, is it something I've done?" Mulder asked.
"No, Mulder, it's not anything you've done, but with Agent Fowley back you don't
need me."
"That's not true Scully, I..."
Just then Diana walked in.
"Hi Fox, Agent Scully."
"Diana," Mulder said without taking his eyes of Scully.
"Agent Fowley. I have to go," Scully said and walked out of the door.
Mulder just stared at the door, the most important person in his life had just
walked out and taken half of his heart, his soul with her and she never even knew.
"What's up with her?" Diana asked.
Mulder turned and saw her, he had totally forgotten she was here.
"She's asked for a transfer."
"That's great Fox, it means you and I would be partners just like we used to be."
"Diana, Scully is my partner."
"Fox I thought you and I together. That we could...."
"There is no us. I've changed. I am no longer the man I was."
"Yes, but she's not like us. Agent Scully does not truly believe."
"It doesn't matter if she believes or not Scully is my partner and has been for
six years. I'm not letting her go not without a fight. She's truly the only person I trust," he said
standing up and walking out of the door. Diana followed him.
MULDER'S APARTMENT
Fox Mulder walked into his apartment shut the door behind him, took of his jacket and sat down.
"I can't let her go. How will I carry on?" He said to himself.
There was a knock at the door. He went over and opened it, wishing it was Scully, but standing there was Diana.
"Fox we need to talk," she said.
"There's nothing to talk about, Diana."
"Yes there is. I love you and I want to be your partner professionally and personally and I know that you love me."
"No Diana, I thought I loved you once, but now I know I didn't and I never really
trusted you either. I didn't think that I could trust anyone but..."
"Scully?" Diana guessed.
"Yes."
"But she's not right for you I am."
"Diana, I had no choice in the matter. She's always been there for me. We've
been through a lot and most of it was bad and even thought it was my fault she's never blamed
me."
"That's it. I don't want to hear about Scully, I want to talk about us."
"Diana there is no us. Please leave."
"You will regret this Fox. You and I were meant to be together and I'll prove
it to you!" She stormed out slamming the door behind her.
Mulder shook his head. She just didn't understand how he felt about Scully,
how she was his soulmate, the best part of him, and how empty he felt without her.
Diana Fowley left Mulder's apartment and went back to her own. A plan was forming
in her mind. She would show him that they were meant to be together no matter what she had
to do.
AD SKINNER'S OFFICE, FBI HEADQUARTERS
Skinner was sitting at his desk when his phone rang.
"Skinner."
"Sir, it's Agent Fowley."
"What can I do for you?" he asked.
"It's about Agent Scully. he's become obsessed with Agent Mulder and won't
leave him alone. He doesn't know what to do," Diana explained.
"Really Agent Fowley. Leave it with me I'll deal with it."
"Yes, sir, and thank you," she said as she left.
Skinner shook his head. Scully was not the one obsessed with Fox Mulder. Dana
Scully, a beautiful and smart woman, how could anyone not have feelings for her, if only
he wasn't her AD and if she hadn't met Fox Mulder. But he was and she had, he never stood a chance.
He reached over and picked up the phone.
"Agent Mulder, it's AD Skinner, you have a problem."
Skinner went on to tell Mulder about the conversation he had with Diana Fowley.
BASEMENT OFFICE, FBI HEADQUARTERS
Diana had gone back to work. She was smiling to herself, soon everything she had
ever wanted would be hers. What did he see in Dana Scully, she was nothing special and she
definitely didn't think like him? The door flew open and in stormed one very angry Fox
Mulder.
"How dare you go to Skinner and make up a story like that. How could you?"
"I didn't make it up. Haven't you noticed the way she looks at you? How jealous she is when we are together?"
At that point Mulder stopped listening to her. Jealous of him and Diana, that
was why Scully wanted a transfer. Which meant that Special Agent Dana Scully had feelings for
him, that thought made him smile. He was going to have to tell her.
Diana saw him smile. "Fox..." she whispered.
He looked at her. "Skinner's arranging for your transfer. He doesn't believe
you should work with me."
She just stared at him, he turned and walked out the door.
"Goodbye Diana," and with that he left.
SCULLY'S APARTMENT
A life without Mulder -- just the thought of it made her feel lost, cold, empty
and alone. She just wanted him to be happy and Scully knew that it would not be with her. She
was so different they argued all the time, but how she loved him. Scully didn't know
when she had begun to feel like this, but it was probably from the first moment she walked
into his office and he looked at her with those glasses on. She smiled at the memory. She could
not remember a time when she hadn't been in love with him. It was strange, with Fox Mulder
she felt complete -- who would have thought that when she fell for a man it would be someone so
completely different from her, from anyone she had ever met.
There was a knock at her door she went over and looked through the peephole and
standing there was the man she had just been thinking about. She opened the door.
"Mulder what are you doing here?" she asked.
"I came to see you."
"Shouldn't you be at work?"
"Scully, we need to talk."
"No, Mulder, we don't."
"Yes we do, look, about Diana."
"Mulder, I definitely do not want to talk about Diana Fowley."
"I don't love her Scully. I thought I did once but that was over long ago."
"What's that got to do with me?"
"Scully, Diana went to see Skinner..."
"What for?" Scully asked.
"Well umm..." Mulder stuttered.
"Mulder."
"She told him that you were obsessed with me."
"She said WHAT?"
"Look, Scully..."
"Why on earth did she say that?"
"Because she wants me back in her life."
"What did Skinner say?"
"He's transferring her."
"How do you feel about that?"
"What, about Diana leaving?"
Scully nodded. "Yes."
"Well, I'm glad, I got sick of everytime turning around seeing her there watching
me. It was driving me up the wall."
"I thought that you wanted to work with her, the way you were acting."
"Scully, you are my partner and I don't need or want another one."
"Mulder, I don't know what to say."
Mulder stepped towards her slowly. "Say you won't leave me, ever," he whispered.
"I won't leave you ever," she repeated.
Before Mulder knew what he was doing he leaned forward and kissed her. She pulled
back and looked at him.
"Mulder, I'm staying -- you don't need to do that."
"Scully, I'm not doing this to make you stay. Kissing you is something I've dreamt
about for a long time. I love you, Scully, and have for a long time -- when you said you were
leaving you were taking the best parts of me with you."
"Mulder, I'll always be with you no matter what, if not in body but in spirit. It was killing me as well to see you with Diana I just couldn't stand it."
Mulder smiled. "You were jealous which must mean that..." he paused hopefully.
"Yes, Mulder, I love you too, and if you're going to kiss me do it properly!"
With that Mulder pulled Scully into his arms and kissed her passionately.
"Was that better...?" he asked mischievously.
"Yes..." she whispered.
The phone rang.
"Yes," Scully said.
Mulder looked at her.
"No sir, I don't need that transfer, everything has been sorted out." She smiled
and put the phone down.
Mulder pulled her back in to his arms and they fell onto the sofa kissing.
AD SKINNER'S OFFICE
He put down the phone and smiled. They finally admitted how they felt. Skinner
felt a wave of jealousy overcome him. Wishing that he was in Scully's arms instead but he
knew that she was where she belonged -- with Mulder. They were meant to be together.
