The Choice (2/2)

Dana Scully walked into their basement office to find a bouquet of daffodils on her desk. Mulder was sitting at his desk staring intently at her.
The moment was broken by the shrill ring of the phone.
“Mulder,” he answered.
“Agent Mulder this is Skinner. I’d like you and Agent Scully to come up here please.”
“Yes sir.”
Mulder hung up the phone.
He looked at Scully, “You know every time he calls I’m afraid it’s about us.”
“Mulder, there’s no way anyone knows...how could they? We don’t so much as hold hands anywhere in public.”
“Let’s go then.”

Skinner’s Office
“This is the deal. Several people have been killed in a small town on the coast of Rhode Island. There’s a pattern though. There’s always a love triangle involved. A jealous ex-girlfriend is always the murderer. Her ex-boyfriend’s significant other is always the victim.”
“So how is this an X-File?” Mulder asked.
Skinner sighed, “All of them, all 6 murders, the murderer is found on the scene unconscious. When they wake up they claim to not know how they got there or what they had done. One woman was not even aware that she was in the same city as her ex-boyfriend, let alone that she’d killed his wife.”
Mulder raised his eyebrows.
“Now I’m not saying that this is what I believe but...this town has an old ghost story. They claim that in the 1800’s a man named James Martin came to town with his wife Katherine. They, by chance, ran into an old girlfriend of his. The woman’s name was Diane I believe. It turns out she never suspected that James would marry someone else. She killed Katherine. When James found out he killed her, and then he killed himself.”
“I’m sorry, where is this going sir?” Scully asked.
Skinner sighed again, “The local’s say that her ghost never left the coast. That she, through the couples, is reliving that ordeal over and over. I just thought you might look into it. No matter what’s happening we need to stop these murders. Agent...” he was cut off by a knock at the door.
Diana Fowley entered.
“Like I was saying. Agent Fowley will be joining you. She’s the one who found this case.”
Scully threw a look at Mulder.
He shrugged helplessly.

On the Road again
Scully, Mulder, and Fowley sat in an uncomfortable silence.
Scully was staring out the window. Mulder knew that she didn’t trust Diana an inch and that she was extremely suspicious as to why she had invited them on the case.
“You know I ah, have to use the little boy’s room. Why don’t you two get something to munch on,” Mulder said as he pulled up to a gas station. “On me of course. Just get me some seeds,” he added as he handed Scully a twenty.
Several minutes later they were back in the car. The radio was on now to fill the silence.
“Hello everyone we’re back with your requests and dedications. Here’s one that just came in. To Laura Petrie,” said the DJ on the radio.
Scully’s head snapped up. She looked at Mulder who gave her an innocent smile.
“Just remember that I love you, from Rob. That’s sweet. Well Laura here’s your song, with love, from Rob.”
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you.
You'd be like heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived.
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you.

Pardon the way that I stare.
   There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak.
But if you feel like I feel.
Please let me know that it's real.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you.

I need you baby, if it's quite all right,
I love you baby, you warm a lonely night.
   I love you baby.
Trust in me when I say It's OK:
Oh pretty baby, don't let me down I pray.
Oh pretty baby, now that I found you, stay.
And let me love you, oh baby let me love you, oh baby....

You're just too good to be true.

As the song faded away, suddenly the silence wasn’t so unbearable.
“Mulder, I got you some iced tea from the station,” Scully said handing Mulder a Snapple.
A look passed between them that Diana thankfully missed. ‘I love you too Mulder,’ Scully thought.

The next day
There was a knock on the door very early the next morning. Sleepily Mulder got up and went to the door. He was a little surprised to find Diana standing there.
“Fox, there’s been another death.”
He blinked. She pushed passed him into the room and shut the door.
“Debbie Diaz threw her ex-boyfriend’s lover Sandra Perez off of a suspension bridge late last night. Police have already recovered the body. I’ve arranged for Agent Scully to do the autopsy while we interview Diaz.”
Mulder looked at her. He couldn’t help but notice that her plan left them alone together for the better part of the day.
But what could he do. If he suggested something else she would get suspicious.
“All right. I’ll tell Scully and then we can head off.”
“If you want I’ll tell her since I’m already ready,” Diana said. Something gave Mulder the feeling that she’d enjoy it a little too much.
“No, uh, why don’t you get us some of that free continental breakfast and I’ll wake her up. It makes more sense, our rooms are connected” he said, hoping his the tone in his voice would convince her not to argue.
“All right Fox,” Diana said. Watching her walk away Mulder wondered what he ever saw in that woman.
He had been right, Scully was not very happy when she heard the news.
“Mulder she’s coming on to you. She’s doing this on purpose,” Scully said.
“I know she is. You have to trust me. I love you, and I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize what we have,” he glanced at the door to make sure it was locked before pulling her into his arms.
They stood like that for several seconds before Mulder continued softly, “When I woke up this morning, and you weren’t there I didn’t like it. I want to wake up next to you as much as we possibly can. The next case we get...Diana won’t be around to ruin our fun.”
Despite herself Scully couldn’t help but laugh. She tilted her head invitingly and Mulder leaned down to kiss her.
“We better get ready,” Scully said, reluctantly breaking the kiss. They stepped out of each others arms.
“I’ll see you soon.”

Debbie Diaz’s cell
“I was happy for Robert. I mean, Sandy is- was a nice girl. I would never ruin that for him,” Diaz told them.
“How did you break up?” Fowley asked.
“We broke up because I had to move to California for a while. It was a clean break. We weren’t really in love. He sill writes to me. We’re good friends. That’s why I’m here...for their wedding,” she said tearfully.
“Then why did you kill Sandra?” Mulder asked.
“I didn’t,” she closed her eyes.
“Then why did you turn yourself in?” he prompted.
“Because they’re going to find my prints all over her. You’re investigation will prove that I was the one who threw her over the bridge. But I wasn’t.”
“Would you like to explain that?” Diana asked.
“Listen, you know the ghost story right? Of Diane Potter. Well I read all the stuff on ghosts I can. I’m no professional but I think that she posses us to kill,” Diaz said.
“That’s an easy story to rely on considering you’ll probably be here for a while.”
“You can listen and try to stop her or you can let her keep killing people. It’s up to you.”
Mulder nodded.
“All right. I’m not sure but I think, to stop her, that the woman being possessed has to die instead of the victim.”
“So why don’t I just kill you?” asked Mulder.
“Because she’s not with me now. It’s either kill one innocent person to stop the killings, or let the killings continue...and break the hearts of several men.”

Later that day
“Well Sandra Perez died upon impact to the water that much is clear. What are you hoping to find at the crime scene that the police haven’t already found?” Scully asked Mulder. The three of them were walking across an open field to where the bridge was.
“It’s a hunch,” Mulder said, unable to provide more of an answer then that.
Before any of them could speak up again a small voice said, “Hi.”
They turned to see a blond boy standing there. He had a toy triceratops in his hand.
“What are you doing here?” Mulder asked.
“I live up there,” he said pointing to a near-by house. “Are you here to look at the bridge?
“Yeah, how did you know that?”
“Mommy and daddy said something bad happened there. There were police when we got home this morning. We were spending that night at Aunt Shelly’s.”
Mulder smiled slightly.
“Come on, why don’t we look at the scene while Fox talks,” Diana said to Scully suddenly.
Scully looked at her strangely but seeing no reason not to, she turned and followed Diana.
Mulder and the little boy talked for a while until Mulder finally straightened.
“Well I have to go talk to my partner now,” he said. As he said it an old newspaper clipping fell from his pocket.
The boy leaned over to pick it up and then his eyes went wide.
“Is this lady famous?” he asked curiously, showing Mulder the picture of Diane Potter on the page.
“No, why?”
“Cause...she was right there. She was following that brown haired lady. She was standing right behind her then POOF, she went away.”
Mulder’s eyes widened, suddenly realizing what was about to happen. “Run up to the house and call the police all right?”
Without stopping to see if the boy had obeyed Mulder ran for all he was worth.
Meanwhile Scully and Fowley had gotten to the bridge. Scully did not step to cross it but instead walked down a little further until she was standing at a spot on the cliff’s edge looking down. That was where they’d found Sandra’s body. It was such a long way to fall.
As she stood there suddenly Scully was aware of a presence behind her. She whirled around just in time to see Diana’s fist coming at her. She landed roughly on the ground, her hair just beginning to fall over the cliff.
“Diana what the hell are you doing?”
“You can’t even remember my name can you. You bitch,” Diana leapt at her.
“What?”
The two struggled across the ground. Scully was to busy blocking and sending blows to grab for her gun.
“You’re not good enough for James, Katherine. It’s me who’s meant to be with him,” Diana screamed. Her eyes were not focused.
“Diana stop,” Scully yelled back, trying to kick her away.
“It’s Diane you slow witted,” but before she could finish Mulder’s voice cut her off.
“Diana no!”
They were rolling closer and closer to the edge. They were both about to fall off when Mulder reached them. He jumped just in time to grab one of their hands in his.
He tried desperately to pull them both back up.
“Mulder!”
“Just hold on!”
Then suddenly Diana started kicking at Scully.
“Diana what the hell are you doing?”
Scully started to slip from his grasp. There was no choice really. There was only one thing to do. He let Diana slip from his hand and grabbed Scully with both of his. He pushed Diana’s scream to the back of his mind and pulled Scully back up onto the ridge.
“Are you all right?” he asked wiping the blood away from her face. Diana had looked worse...she probably looked even worse now.
She nodded still shaking.
“Ahh, they could make our lives into a movie.”
They didn’t get up from the ground until the police came driving up.

There...did I miss something?
I really liked writing that one. The ending could have been better. May I thank Lauryn Hill and N’Sync for me stealing their work...and whoever Lauryn Hill stole that song from.
Sorry about no smut. I just don’t do that sort of thing...though I love to read it!
