“Agent Fowley, how did it go?” The man lighting a cigarette asked. “It’s
done, Agent Mulder is going crazy. I injected him with the substance you
gave me.”

The Smoking Man nodded. Fowley had no idea what exactly she had injected Fox
Mulder with but she knew it would cause him to go crazy, screaming about
voices in his head. As the substance dies down, the voices in his head will
grow quieter but that would take a few days. These “voices” were really the
thoughts of people around him. They knew the doctors would be monitoring him
as much as possible. The Smoking Man didn’t tell Fowley that Mulder could
end up with brain damage or even amnesia. He believed she wouldn’t have gone
through with it if he had told her.

“Where’s Agent Scully?” he asked.

“I don’t know, she left in hurry making certain that only her mother be
allowed in to see Fox. For some reason she won’t even let A.D. Skinner see
him.”

“I’d like to see Fox Mulder, my name is Margaret Scully.”

“Yes, Mrs. Scully, Dana told us to let only you in to see Mr. Mulder,” the
nurse, who was named Jenna, said. “I’ve been helping to take care of him.”
Margaret nodded.

“My daughter wasn’t able to tell me much about his condition...”

“When Mr. Mulder was brought in, he was disoriented and in a lot of pain. He
was also screaming about voices in his head. The woman that brought him here
said something about LSD but we haven’t found any traces of that. We did,
however, find an unknown drug in his system. We can’t figure out what it is
but it was apparently injected.”

“Oh my goodness!” Maggie said. Jenna led her into Mulder’s room. “Is he
unconscious?”

“Yes. The doctor had him brought into this room and restrained after he
collapsed. Let me get him, he can answer any questions you have much better
than I can.” Maggie took Mulder’s hand when Jenna left to get the doctor.
“Fox, Fox, it’s Maggie. Can you hear me?” She brushed a lock of hair from
his forehead and debated whether or not to call his mother. Dana had told
her about the fight they had but this was serious.

“Mrs. Scully?” She jumped and turned to face the doctor. “I’m sorry, I
didn’t mean to startle you.” he said holding his hand out. “I’m Doctor
Madison. Dana told me to expect you.” Maggie waited for him to tell her
Mulder’s condition. “Agent Mulder had been drugged with an unknown
substance. This is what is causing him to hear things in his head. Since we
don’t know what the drug is, we won’t be able to give him an antidote. We’ll
have to wait until it leaves his system.”

Mrs. Scully was almost afraid to ask. “Is that all?”

“I’m afraid not. The headaches have also caused some swelling.” Maggie
gasped and Doctor Maidson put his hand on her shoulder. “We brought the
swelling down but there is possbility of amnesia or even brain damage.”

Dana Scully grabbed her suitcase and ran to the exit. She was eager to
see how her partner was doing. She needed to somehow tell him what she saw.
Scully still couldn’t believe it. Luckily she had taken her camera! She
decided to take the film to the Lone Gunmen so she wouldn’t lose it. Any
camera they had ended up stripped of it’s film or destroyed.

    “Scully? Hello, Scully?”

“What? Oh, I’m sorry, Frohike.” She had been thinking about Mulder. When
she told her mom she’d be back soon, Maggie had told her Mulder’s condition.
“I was just thinking about Mulder.” she said sadly.

“How is he?” Byers asked. Scully had forgotten to tell them about their
friend. She explained everything up to the fact that Fowley had brought him
in and said he was high on LSD. “You think she doped him up with something,
don’t you?” Langly asked. Scully’s answer was a nod.

Scully entered Mulder’s room. She nearly winced when she saw him, tears
swelling in her eyes. She turned when she felt a hand on her shoulder. “Hi,
mom.”

“Hi, sweetheart. Did everything go alright?” Scully smiled sadly and
nodded.

“Mom, remember that woman, Diana Fowley?”

“Yes dear, in fact, she’s here trying to see Fox. Doctor Madison isn’t
letting her up, though. Not until you give the okay.”

“That bitch!”

“Dana!” Maggie scolded, appalled by her daughter’s language. “Why on Earth
would you call her that?”

“Mom, she’s responsible for Mulder’s condition! She drugged him!” Scully
shouted. “Where is she?”

Maggie had never seen her daughter so distraught, well, maybe once when
Scully thought Mulder had turned against her. “Down the hall, in the waiting
room. Why?” Scully didn’t answer but headed down the hall. Maggie took a
quick look at Mulder and followed her daughter.

Fowely didn’t look up from the magazine she was reading until Scully was
two feet in front of her. “Agent Scully,” she said politely.

“Why did you do it?” Scully asked.

“Do what?”

“You know what I’m talking about. Why did you drug Mulder?” Fowley’s face
blanched. *She knew? How?* “Agent Scully, I have no idea what you’re
talking about,” she lied. “Oh, sure, and I believe in the Easter bunny!”
Scully answered sarcastically and grabbed her by the arm. “Diana Fowley, you
are under arrest for the attempted murder of Special Agent Fox Mulder.”

“Excuse me?” she asked.

“Agent Scully.” a stern voice said. It was Skinner. “What’s going on, why
are you arresting Agent Fowley?”

“She tried to kill Mulder, sir!”

“Do you have proof of that?”

“Well, no, but I just know it was her!”

“That’s very circumstantial, Agent,” he replied.

“We should wait until Mulder wakes up. Hopefully he can clear this all up.”

Skinner regarded her, confused. “Hopefully? What are you talking about? Did
I miss
something?”

Maggie, who had been standing in the doorway, spoke up. “Fox may have
amensia or even brain damage when he awakens.”

“What??” Now Fowley was shocked and sank onto the chair to keep her legs
>from buckling underneath. “I- I- didn’t know, he didn’t tell me. That
bastard didn’t tell me that!” She screamed holding back her tears.

“Agent Fowley, calm down. Are you saying you did drug Mulder?” Skinner
asked.

“Yes, I did! But I didn’t know what I drugged him with! The man just gave
me something and told me to inject Fox with it. He told me it was harmless,
that it would help rid the voices in his head. I just wanted him to get
better.” Maggie and Skinner looked at one another confused, but Scully
understood.

“This man wanted to take Mulder’s supposed ability to read minds. Mulder
would either forget everything that happened or not be able to do anything at
all, he’d have to quit the Bureau. Fowley, who is this man?”

“I don’t know his name. He’s tall, in his 60s, and smokes a lot. I think he
smokes Morley’s.”

Scully looked at Skinner. The Cancer Man!
