If you havent read "A thornless Rose" you might want to read it before reading this one. It can be found here....

Title: Atropus
Sequel to "A Thornless Rose"
Author: TeaL
Feedback: antiFOWLone@yahoo.com
Flames will be used to light TFO's funeral pyre.
Keywords: FowlFic (would you expect anything else?)
Rating: PG, for violent impulses and a bad word :)
Authors note: Ok this is long so I'll put the important stuff here and the not so important stuff at the end. The title is yet again from myth. Atropus , in greek and roman myth, was one of the fates.She cut the thread, the life, when it's time on earth had come. Why this title? Because there is a very small reference to this in the fic. The ref. to Beethoven is the dog *get it??* NOT the composer! There is a tiny "Three of a kind" ref.
"A thornless Rose" was my first FowlFic ever and almost a year later I decided to carry on the madness. Scully is back to her murderous ways, although she isn't quite as insane this time. Mulder as always is blind and stupid and his take on what's happening is more serious than Scully's.
As always, this isn't serious and I don't believe in characterisations in FowlFics so forget everything you know and picture the wondrous events as they unfold :)

Dedicated to all the poor writer's on one of my mailing lists who have been flamed recently. You guys rock, don't listen to what was said in those letters and put those flames to good use.... Burn TFO!!!! yea!!

ATROPUS
by TeaL

Mulder sat by Diana's bedside. Two weeks had passed since the 'Cell Phone incident' and there had been no change in Diana Fowley's condition.
Mulder didn't know what kind of change he expected, Diana had brain damage, he knew that.The doctors had told him over and over that until she came out of the coma, there would be no way to determine the severity of the damage.
Mulder knew it was bad.
Diana was lying in a hospital bed drooling more than Beethoven and Homer Simpson put together. That, the occasional muscle spasm and the heart monitor were the only indication she was still alive.
Mulder didn't know why he came back to her bedside day after day. His only true comfort was when Scully showed up and sat with him.
She truly was his life-line, keeping him tethered to sanity if only by a thin thread.
A thread that would have broken a long time ago, was it not for her patience and understanding.
Hell, if it wasn't for Scully he'd probably be the one in this bed fighting for his life.
Mulder glanced up and was relieved to see his life-line still sitting opposite him.
Scully was staring out the window lost in thought, a sad look haunting her features.
Mulder felt a twinge of guilt.
Scully didn't need to be here, but he appreciated the fact she voluntarily sat with him, so much that he's *never* asked her to leave.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scully sat by Diana's bedside. Two weeks had passed since the 'plug-pulling incident' and there had been no change in Fowley's condition.
The woman was holding onto life with unnatural determination and Scully sat fighting the urge to jump up and scream "Die Already!" at her.
Mulder hadn't left the hospital the whole time except to go to work, but even then Scully knew his mind and heart were still in this room.
She felt if she had to spend one more day sitting here she would go completely insane.
She only dragged herself to the hospital to sit with him so he wouldn't focus *all* his attention on the veggie.
Veggie-Girl!
Mega!Veg!
A smirk threatened to disturb Scully's polished sombre features. She's worked hard on looking this depressed, although it wasn't all an act.
Now, though, the depression was fading, slowly being replaced with joy.
She wasn't meant to be happy, she just wanted the Mega!Veg to die already.....
Oh god, she was going to start laughing.
If only Mulder would ask her to leave.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mulder noticed the corners of Scully's mouth turn upwards slightly.
He guessed she was thinking about happier times before the shooting.....before the 'incident'.
He wished she would share her thoughts with him as he needed a good laugh. Something to take his mind off Diana's current state.
It was almost inhuman of them to keep Diana alive like this, but what if she woke up?
What if the damage wasn't as bad as everyone expected?
Mulder couldn't live with not knowing.
Another muscle spasm struck Diana's body and she twitched slightly in her bed.
Mulder turned his face away, unable to watch, when he found himself staring at an even more disturbing sight...
Scully had honest to god tears in her eyes.
He had been thinking so much about Diana's future and about his own feelings that he hadn't even realised this was affecting Scully so much.
Maybe she *did* need a break from this sterile white room for a while.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scully noticed Mulder's eyes light up for the first time in weeks as she tried to hide her smirk.
What on earth did he think she was smiling about?
Scully wished she could share her thoughts with him.
She needed a good laugh.
It was pure torture for Scully, the way they were keeping Diana alive like this. What if she woke up? What if the extent of the damage inflicted on her by yours truly wasn't as bad as everyone expected?
A sudden movement caught Scully's eye and all her fears were instantly diminished.
The bitch was twitching again, not only that but Scully also noticed fresh drool pooling onto the sheets.
Scully wanted to jump for joy, no way was Veggie-Girl ever going to be normal again.
Whatever 'normal' was.
Scully knew there was no way in hell she was going to be able to disguise a full on laughing fit but did her best to hold it in.
Unfortunately, much like trying to hold in a coughing fit in the middle of an exam, her eyes began to water.
Scully felt she'd explode if she didn't let it out soon and shot Mulder a brief sympathetic look as she stood and left the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mulder watched her leave.
He was grateful that she was even on hospital property. He never would have been able to get through this without her.
He *did* care about Scully, even if recently he hadn't shown it as much as he should have.
He didn't want to be with Diana, he had no feelings for her at all. Yet he felt like he owed it to her to be by her side, he wasn't sure why.
It was pointless really.
He felt terrible and disgusted at himself thinking it, but he actually found himself hoping Diana would give in and move on. It would be better for everyone, including Diana, and life could once again return to normal.
Whatever 'normal' was.
Diana chose that moment to want to be the center of attention once more. She twitched once, then lay still.
A long loud *beeeeeeeeeeeep* resonated through the room and echoed down the halls.
Mulder almost went into shock.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scully sat on a single chair outside the room thinking about how much Mulder had been ignoring her lately.
She'd never realised he cared *that* much for Fowley before and she could not understand why he'd want to be at her bedside 24/7.
She thought it was completely pointless.
Scully wished Diana would hurry up and die. What she wouldn't give to run into that room, grab Diana by the shoulders and shake her while screaming "Die Bitch Die!"
She giggled at the image of Mulder's face if she actually did that.
It felt good to laugh.
Concentrating, Scully focused all the negative energy she'd bottled inside since the 'incident' on the foul thing in the room behind her.
A loud *Beeeeeeeeeep* echoed down the hall breaking her out of her trance.
Scully almost started clapping with delight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mulder stood back as the doctors did their best to revive Diana.
But it was all in vain.
They murmured apologies and gave the two living agents sympathetic looks as they exited the room.
Leaving them alone with Diana.
Mulder sat back in his chair and rested his head in his hands. He felt a hand on his arm and slowly raised his head to meet the familiar eyes..
Scully gave him her own sympathetic look and also left so he could grieve alone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scully tried to get in on the action, subsequently getting in the way as the doctors did their best to revive Diana.
Scully was kicking herself for not suggesting a "Do Not resuscitate" notice.
These doctors sure were persistent, Scully would have given up on the Fowl after about 10 seconds, she wouldn't have wasted another second on her than that.
Diana just wasn't worth it.
After what seemed an eternity, the doctors stepped back and left them alone with the corpse.
Scully saw the pain her partner was dealing with and placed a sympathetic hand on his arm before leaving.
Scully had patiently waited 6 years to have this man, a few more weeks wouldn't kill her........
~AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER (except Mulder, but he'll get over it)
THE END!~
MORE Authors notes: I'm pretty proud of all my little injokes in this one LOL. The Beethoven one was pure coincidence. I didn't pick it until after I wrote it. If you haven't seen the film and don't get it...
David Duchovny makes a brief, but hilarious, appearance in it. I had a couple of Simpson refs in here, don't worry if you missed the second one, only minds as warped as mine would have pictured it right away.
The scene were Mulder's 'life-line' is still sitting opposite him....picture Bart as an anchor..."think harder Homer"..... yes, I'm talking about the monorail ep....I received this mental image of Scully as a heap of rope sitting in a chair.. well i found it funny....
I never took medicine or anything like that at school, my strong points were history, geography and plant science off all things so excuse my lack of knowledge in this fic. Don't focus on the technical side, just partay cuz she's dead....again lol
Hope the way I wrote it didn't make it too confusing. I had no problems with it but then I wrote it lol. It's a little different to my usual writing style don't ya think.
BTW the word "Atropus" was really hard for me to type....I bet SG-1 fans can work out what I accidently kept typing!!
ok 'nuff from me.
Disclaimer: All things XF related don't belong to me. If they did do you think I'd still be living out in the wop wops in NZ? All hail the almighty CC, I am but a meek servant girl who means you, and your creations (except TFO) no harm.
