In July 1999 a mysterious ship crash landed on Macross Island in the Pacific Ocean.

Disclaimer- we realize that there are rumours floating about that Macross Island does not really exist. We also realize that Earth has not just gotten over a huge global war. We don't care. If people can believe that Elvis is still alive, then we can believe the SDF-1 is coming!
