| Magnets: Myth or Medicine? |
|
Using magnets for healing or improving conditions such as arthritis is growing in popularity. Where did this idea originate? The use of magnets for therapy can be found in the ancient societies of India, China, and Egypt. Researchers are studying the positive and negative effects of the use of magnets. Not much is really known about the effects at this time. One theory is that magnets affect the iron in red blood cells, improving the blood's oxygen-carrying ability. Another theory is that magnets have an effect on nerve endings, modifying the electrical processes in the body. It has also been suggested that magnets may help counteract the negative effects of pollution from microwave ovens, TV sets, and the New York subway system! People are using magnets to attempt to accelerate healing, reduce pain, and improve energy (mental & physical). It is said that a north magnetic pole magnet is stimulating, while a south magnetic pole magnet is relaxing. However, if this is true, magnets should only be used with great caution. A stimulating effect could stimulate the wrong things, a latent tumor or disease process for example. Whether magnets are beneficial, or have a negative effect, or no effect, the decision is yours to make. However, perhaps it would be wise to wait until further studies are completed in the study of energy medicine. |

| Gearing Up: A Look at Babylon 5's Second Season, Part Two By Rob Langenderfer |

|
The story "A Spider in the Web" is an interesting and entertaining one in which a friend of Talia's is murdered. The story is not a great one, but it will hold your interest, and the ending of the story continues Talia's process of seeing the true face of the Psi Corps. It also shows Sheridan as being very concerned about the current state of Earth government and the dangerous influence that Psi Corps and other mysterious groups (such as Bureau 13) have in it.
"A Race Through Dark Places" continues some of the plot threads of the preceding episode. Walter Koenig makes another fine guest appearance as Bester. Talia learns that the Psi Corps performed brutal experiments on telepaths who have then left the Corps and run away as a result. It also is a further demonstration of the very compassionate side to Dr. Franklin, seen in the first season story "The Quality of Mercy". One of these two episodes (and I think it's this one) features Sheridan taking Delenn out to dinner and the bonds of a romance begin to form between them. This is another good, if unspectacular story, that serves to develop some key storylines in the series. "Soul Mates" is a somewhat humorous story from the pen of Peter David. It is one of the weaker stories of the season as we meet Londo's wives and one of Talia's former lovers. Babylon 5 does drama so well that anything other than it takes the series down a slight notch. Yet this is not a poor episode. It will keep you entertained for, as many a reviewer and writer and fan has pointed out, it is the last appearance of the happy-go-lucky Londo. From now on, he would descend into darkness and then try to work his way out of it, but he would never be a light, comedic character again. "The Coming of Shadows" is one of the strongest stories of the entire series. This Hugo Award winning story is a complete classic. Written by Straczynski, it features a visit to the station by the Centauri Emperor, very well played by Turham Bey. It also features William Forward's Lord Refa in a fine appearance. This is perhaps the most important episode in the entire series. It features some fine music and fine direction. I can't recommend this episode highl enough. If I had to choose 5 must-see episodes of Babylon 5, this would definitely be among them. This story features the beginning of the Centauri-Narn War. It features a guest appearance by Michael O'Hare as Ambassador Sinclair. This episode has many chilling, memorable scenes, like when Refa leans over the dying Centauri Emperor for some final words, gives his public proclamation of what was said, tells Londo what the Emperor really said and then he and Londo have their varying reactions. This story has intrigue a-plenty and features fine performances from Andreas Katsulas, Stephen Furst, Bruce Boxleitner and Peter Jurasik. It also contains our first view of the Centauri homeworld and a disturbing prophecy for Londo. Whatever you do, do not miss this episode. "GROPOS" is a very good episode that features Dr. Frankin attempting to reconcile with his estranged father, General Franklin, powerfully portrayed by Paul Winfield. It also features Garibaldi forming a relationship with a young female soldier. This is a very emotional story, in some ways almost as tragic and touching as its predecessor. There's not a lot of vital material here, but it is still a darned good episode. When you don't have arc stories to tell, you can't get much better than this tale by Larry DiTillo. "All Alone in the Night" is a key story written by Straczynski in which Delenn is removed from the Grey Council. Both Mira Furlan and Bill Mumy shine in their scenes together, and the viewer is able to see how their relationship has developed. This plotline is the better of the two that fill this story. It is a classic. The other with Sheridan trapped aboard an alien ship isn't quite as good, but it is still entertaining. Sheridan has a dream that points to some important things for the future. Overall, this is quite a good story and it should definitely be seen. The story's ending is very interesting, and it hints at some future directions that the show would take. "Acts of Sacrifice" is a very good story in which G'Kar must fight to retain the respect of Narns on the station while preventing a bloodbath against the Centauri. It also shows his frustration as he attempts to gain aid from Sheridan and Delenn. This episode is perhaps the last appearance of Mary Kay Adams's Na'Toth on the series. It also shows Londo being shaken by what he has become. "Hunter, Prey"is a decent enough story, but it is one of the more missable tales of the season. Sheridan must attempt to rescue the physician of President Clark who has evidence that Clark faked his illness before Santiago was killed. This episode has some interesting stuff on the Vorlons, but it might end up with my vote for the weakest episode of the season. "There All the Honor Lies" focuses on Sheridan being framed for a murder by a member of the Warrior Caste Minbari. It is a good story, but it isn't anything really special, and like "Hunter, Prey" and "Soul Mates" it is one of the more missable stories of the season. "And Now For A Word" is a very good story that has an Inter-Stellar News reporter visiting the station and interviewing many of the key figures of the station and reporting on what happens. This is a different kind of story, and it is very interesting for its new approach. I'd agree with the people (who I think include Joe Straczynski, the writer of the episode) that claim that this story would be a good one for people who are just getting interested in the series to watch. Many of the stories that follow this one would be very important and very well-made tales that contributed to the overall novel in space that Straczynski is trying to tell with his saga. |
